Climate change is transforming marine and coastal environments across Europe. To support adaptation and resilience, RIVIERADE combines scientific excellence, advanced climate and ocean modelling, and stakeholder engagement to deliver climate information across multiple spatial scales.

Three European Seas

Focusing on the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and Mediterranean Sea to improve our understanding of future marine and coastal changes across diverse European regions.

A Multi-Model Grand Ensemble

Producing a coordinated Grand Ensemble of high-resolution climate and ocean simulations to provide the scientific foundation for climate services at basin, coastal regional and local scales, quantifying uncertainty.

Climate Services Co-Designed with Users and Stakeholders

Developing datasets, indicators, and climate services together with coastal managers, environmental agencies, policymakers, and blue economy sectors to ensure they respond to real-world needs.

Bridging the Decadal Gap

Connecting operational ocean forecasting with initialized decadal predictions and long-term climate projections to improve the ability to anticipate change from the next decade to the decades ahead.

RIVIERADE Earns Official Endorsement as a UN Ocean Decade Action

We are thrilled to announce that RIVIERADE has officially received endorsement as an Ocean Decade Action under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

RIVIERADE kicks off: climate science for more resilient European seas and coastlines

The RIVIERADE project has officially launched. Funded by the Horizon Europe programme with over €4.3 million and coordinated by OGS, it will bring together an international consortium of excellence over the next four years to develop new scientific tools and climate services to support climate change adaptation in European marine and coastal areas.

Focuses on advancing multiscale ocean and biogeochemical modelling across the estuarine–coastal–open sea continuum to strengthen climate risk assessment.

Seeks to enhance regional climate predictions for the Northeastern Atlantic, North Sea and Arctic Ocean, supporting the future evolution of Copernicus Marine climate services.

European Regional and Coastal Seas in a Rapid Changing Climate

Aims to establish a European Digital Ocean Twin by integrating models, observations and automated workflows to support climate adaptation across European seas.

A European partnership for climate resilience

RIVIERADE is composed of 9 partner institutions and 2 affiliated entities from 7 countries, including universities, research institutes, climate centres, and operational oceanography providers. Building on a long history of collaboration in European and international research initiatives, the consortium provides the scientific foundations needed to advance climate services for Europe's seas and coasts.
